Happy Summer

6/14/2013

Dear fifth graders,
I had an amazing year with you!  I will miss you but know that you are going to have lots to look forward to in middle school!  I hope you enjoy your summer with family and friends.  It was a pleasure being your teacher, and I won't ever forget you!
Happy summer!
Love,
Ms. Jung

Challenge

5/26/2013

These challenges will be worth 5 tickets each!

Reading:  Compare and contrast two characters from two novels you have read in fifth grade by making a Venn Diagram.  Each part of the Venn Diagram should have at least 3 characteristics.
Writing:  Write a memoir about your long weekend.
Math:  How many yards are in 5,607 feet?  How many inches?
Science:  Do you get all of your traits from your parents?  Why or why not?

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

A big thank you to Mrs. Barrett, Mr. Holland, Mrs. Lacey, Ms. Koufios, Mr. Petersen, Mrs. Sudhaker, Mrs. Sumner, and Mrs. Uhl for being chaperones on our field trip to Mount Vernon.  The weather was perfect and the students had a great time learning more about our first president and his lovely home!  Thanks so much for chaperoning!

Ticket Challenge

4/29/2013

Here is a new ticket challenge due by Friday, May 3.

Reading/Writing:  What can be included in a memoir to make it more engaging for the reader?
Math:  Create a percent of a number word problem and solve it.
Science:  Think back to our STEM windmill investigation last week.  What were the dependent variables, independent variables, and control variables for our experiment?

Have a marvelous Monday!

With it being around 80 degrees out today, it sure felt like summer!  Our FV fireflies had a terrific Tuesday with finishing up spring break narratives in lab, discussing ideas for memoirs in writing, real-life application and problem solving with percentages in math, and learning more about how the 13 colonies became the 50 states in social studies.

Here is a ticket challenge that will be due by Friday, 4/12.

Reading:  List the parts of a play.
Writing:  Give at least 3 characteristics of memoirs.
Math:  Ms. Jung bought a bridal gift for Ms. Alike from Bed Bath Beyond that was originally $58.  Ms. Jung used a 20% off Bed Bath and Beyond coupon for the gift.  How much was the gift after the discount?  Show all work.
Social Studies:  Give two examples of the impact the Louisiana Purchase had on the United States.

Hope you have a wonderful night!  See you tomorrow.

Today was another busy and exciting day with the start of new novels and play practice in reading, percentages in math, and the continuation of westward expansion in social studies.  In writing, we will look at different types of memoirs and start publishing our very own memoirs.  I'm sure you will have lots of wonderful fifth grade memories to write about.

Quarter 4 is well underway and I'm looking forward to many more warm, sunny, productive days like this one!
